Elephants on 34th Street NYC
Elephants

A neighbor I've never met, Zach Klein, caught the annual progression of Barnum & Bailey's elephants along 34th Street.
Each year when the circus comes to NYC, Barnum & Bailey marches its menagerie through the tunnels into Manhattan and along 34th Street.
It is a vision out of Fellini, made all the more dreamlike for taking place in the middle of the night.

I'd like to point out that there's nothing "dreamlike" about being held in captivity and beaten into performing stupid tricks. Wake up man, those elephants are slaves and your supporting their slavery.
Wake up, man, I'm not "supporting" the mistreatment of elephants, I'm looking out my window at the surreal image of elephants and other big creatures marching down the streets of Manhattan in the middle of the night.
As to enslavement and beatings, where do you get your facts? While I can readily believe an elephant might be happier in the wild than it is in a circus, I'd be surprised if the modern circus doesn't abide by the guidelines of the SPCA. I'd guess any circus as big and well known as Ringling hires SPCA consultants to ensure that its animals are well cared for an healthy.
But that's just a guess. You got facts?
Derek Pennycuff again:
Anyway, just because it's published doesn't make it true, but a quick google search turns up some results, including sources such as PETA, who definately have their own agenda, but should be fairly trustworthy about such things.
I got you're proof right here. Animal hater.
Holy shit...it's just a picture of some elephants!

You are the kind of person a person like Hitler would have liked!
Is this the elephant in the room, then?
Wonderful to have you 'back' of sorts.
In a twisted fit of irony, Hitler had a pet elephant he used to ride when he was little. I don't know if it's a fact or not, I heard it on the playground.
How'd you know the elephants didn't pick those hats themselves? They are intelligent creatures after all...
Anyway, if these 10ft-high animals were being beaten by 5ft-something humans, how'd they reach to bash them over the head?
And since when does walking along in a straight line count as a "trick"? Oh of course; you never see them do that in the wild do you? Not without some angry, top hat-wearing hyenas brandishing whips standing in the bushes shouting commands and cackling maniacally.
Wow, Godwin's law at work.

Michel Gondry captured the parade in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The commentary notes that it was a happy accident that they caught it at all. The scene wasn't planned but they shot some handheld footage that wound up being a great "flashback" scene in the film.
I too am shocked to see how quickly Godwin's Law came into play in a post about elephants marching into Manhattan. Besides, we all know Hitler was a big vegetarian and animal lover. Just like PETA.
hahaha
A lot of wacko leftists have a hair trigger when it comes to the "N"(azi) word. Guess it takes one to know one.
Some of those Elephants are only a few months off retirement and getting then pension - if you bitch about them now then they will end up being fired and having to get new jobs at MacDonalds which lack dignity.
I like the picture. I guess I'm also a Nazi and enjoy abusing animals.
Yikes, i guess a picture says a thousand words. Even words the photographer never intended, and hollow accusations.
Yikes, i guess a picture says a thousand words. Even words the photographer never intended, and hollow accusations.
I wonder what would be going through my mind if I looked out my window and saw a line of elephants marching down my street.
I think it's a nice photograph. Thanks for sharing it, Jeffrey.
you stinking Nazi.
(jk)
Why is it, hitler is always mentioned when people get upset?
Why not mention Bush/Blair (uhu, those two who lied about a country and invaded it, killing thousands)
oh wait, its coz it was done in the name of "freedom"
its a PICTURE people, keeerist
Jeffrey, cant wait for your next one :0)
If publishing a picture means tacit endorsement of everything it contains, or could possibly signify, then I guess we should retire photo journalism. Can somebody start collecting the cameras, please?
I've been in touch with said elephants, and they are mostly fine, though disgruntled. "We are treated with a fair amount of respect," said one, "but we hate the music the humans play."
DANCE FOR ME, ELEPHANT!!! ENTERTAIN ME!!!
And if elephants had opposable thumbs and we didn't, we'd be the ones dancing down the street for their entertainment.
And they'd be the ones making pointless comments on some elephant's blog.
Besides, elephants are mean. I watched one put a Homer in it's mouth.
"Can somebody start collecting the cameras, please?"
You can have my camera when you pry it from my cold dead hands.
Wake up man, those elephants are slaves... but in the meantime, we can save dolphins by cutting our plastic six-pack rings before disposing them, and keep plastics out of the food-chain by re-using our shopping bags.
If that photo was taken and the elephant didn't sign a release, you all may be open to litigation!
Wait... of course that photo was taken... I just saw it... but... well.. whatever...

It's been fairly well documented that the decorative crowns on the heads of elephants cover their scars.
I've been worried about apartness lately; I'm certain that his blue toque covers hideous head scars. Poor guy.
For the non-Canadians out there, toque rhymes with nuke.
Excuse my ignorance, but what does PETA stand for? People Eat Tasty Animals?
The thought that anything PETA publishes might be referred to as "documentation" disturbs me far more than tall tales of animal abuse by Ringling Brothers.
Can I be the first to say that this could turn out to be a jumbo thread?
"I'd like to point out that there's nothing "dreamlike" about being held in captivity and beaten into performing stupid tricks."
Mario has obviously never worked to a tight deadline for a big company! We should pick our fights as not to loose the meaning of our message.
Beautiful image! I wish I had taken it.
While we agree trainers in the past have been filmed by such groups as PETA clearly abusing the animals, elephants in particular - it is a very safe assumption that an outfit like Barnum and Bailey have indeed put a stop to any animal abuse.
The shocking thing about these idiotic animal rights people (making comparisons to this blogger and Hitler for example) is they rarely care about people.
Proverbs 12:10
A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
I'm sure the line of elephants at night in the city was dreamlike, thanks for the photo - pay no heed to these dimwits.
This seems about as useful as arguing with a tree.
I'm guessing that's about the response he wanted. (The ANON guy, not Jeff).
Shane
Personally, I'd be willing to pay for a print of a surreal, dreamy picture of Nazis walking into Manhattan. Would, then, there be an uproar on the unfair treatment of the Nazis? We all know that, in the wild, Nazis are not known to frequent Manhattan streets.
I like elephants.
But PETA sucks, the bunch of freaking lunatics. Hey, I have an idea...feed PETA to the elephants! yay!
How does elephant taste? I've never had it myself.
Wow, what an uproar. It seems to me that when people take things to an extreme, no matter which side of the fence they're on, they lose all sight of reason and just blindly argue their point for the sake of being right.
Come on, people. Let's just try to use a little brains.
The comparison of Mr. Z to Hitler is just ridiculous.
I think that perhaps some of you are just jealous that you don't get to look out of your window and see something as interesting as an elephant parade in NYC.
I look out my window and I see trees, a highway, and some dirt.
Don’t you guys have jobs?
My God! lol
The guy posts about a surreal experience while looking out his window and you people turn it into a slamfest over what? Elephants?
I got a better idea...
Why do you self-important tree-hugging hippies get real jobs and shut it? That'd be brilliant.
Who's going to tell the ZEBRAS!!??
Run, run, run for your lives!!
lol
This is too funny. Keep up the good posts.
its hilarious how people take every stinkin thing so damn seriously... life is too short.
these hitler posts are hilarious! i love how youre equated to hitler if you found the image interesting or amusing. Give me a freakin break.
While PETA has done some extreme things in its past, it has also done some wonderful things, like bring the very idea of animal rights to the general public consciousness.
RE: Nazi's and Dirty Hippies
I think the discussion would go a lot further if people thought before they typed, and instead spoke to each others ideas instead of demonizing or deriding them. If you call someone a [ Dirty/Lazy Hippie, Fascist, Nazi, Hitler, whiny liberal, tree hugger, etc... ] you just write yourself off as an ass.
Damn Hippies.
(I'm an Ass and proud)
Animal Rights = Oxymoron
you people have too much time on your hands...
JEFFREY'S A WITCH!
BURRRRRRRRN 'IM!!!1!!!
and blogger AND google should be shut down for bringing such heiniosity to the interweb.
You and Chaz Barkely are my role models, I want to spit on a kid and beat an elephant. Keep on rockin' in the free world, Zelda Maier!
Is there any thing in the Patriot Act or the skeleton closet we can use to go back in time to yesterday morning an beat mario like a rented elephant and take dream snappers of him?
You know, because sensitivo web designers wear vegan felt clogs and look for the evil imagery of injustice around every corner. We should get a Fortress of Rectitude for chrissakes.
Obviously no one here has ever been attacked by a shark riding and elephant (which I believe was a tactic espoused by Rommel but stifled down by Hitler before Monty drove the dirty Gerrys out of Africa--I will confess at this point, though, that, like my judgment, my history may be the slightest bit suspect).
Where does Ted Nugent come down on the issue of serendipitous elephant photos on 34th? Whichever side he's on, I would prefer to land opposite (I'm guessing it's for unfettered bow hunting on the Serengeti--to which I say, please, please, please, Ted, please go, this will be win-win, a fact of which I and most other sub-Saharan actuaries are nearly certain).
As a vegetarian Buddhist, I am not sure if I am allowed to say this, but great pic. Almost dreamlike... oh someone said that already.
Over here in the UK we take Zebras and squash them on to the road and use them for safe crossing.
Were they walking down a trunk road?
Elephants are cool!
This blog is a big pile of steaming elephant shit.
The biggest problem is the "Leave your comment" function on Blogs. It's totaly useless. A PWOT...
i like elephants. those are happy elephants. i can tell.. i am one. I do not however, like lamas. Especially little ones who do web design, and think im a slave to B&B circus.
:P
I took my children to the shrine circus this weekend. I hadn't been to the circus in 20+ years.
Sadly, it's the same circus, just now, as an adult, I see that the elephants do not appear to be happy walking in a circle.
Abuse or not, it's probably not that great of a life for them. And to be honest, the circus was, in general, painfully boring. My 3 year old asked if we could leave 40 minutes into it (during the fake 'injun shooting trick') and I gladly abliged. We then spent the afternoon in the park.
My son also goes to 'circus school'...basically a kids version of cirque de soleil. Watching that type of show is MUCH more enjoyable. Watching people do acrobatics is argueably more intriguing than watching an elephant walk in a circle.
I thought "blog" was the noise an elephant makes when it sh*ts. But this is even sillier.
beat 'em! better yet, kill 'em and grill 'em!
http://www.elephants.com/news/globalnews.php?newsSubCategory_id=2
he photo is nice and all, but yeah - being a circus elephant sucks.
i don't want to contribute to or even read thru all the vitriol, but i would like to post a comment-vote against moral support of circuses. they're just not nice places for animals. cirque du soleil (or however the heck you spell that) is fantastic, animal-free spectacle.
am a zeldman fan and realize that he wasn't, like, wielding the cattle prod himself.
Wow... That's quite a neat trick you guys pulled. This started off with a picture of a few elephants in Manhatten, when somebody, somewhere opened a can of whackjobs. Those then turned themselves towards this blog and hey presto, one hell of a mindboggling discussion.
In which I just started to partake as well... *sigh*
I once took my (then) 3-year old daughter to the circus. All was fine and dandy, the clowns were funny and all, until the elephants came in, all grey and slow and marching one behind the other.
«Daddy, why are they so sad?» asked my daughter. I didn't have an answer then, but I guess that's what elephants look like in real life. All she had ever seen of elephants were cartoons.
Perhaps some of you should stop getting your facts from saturday morning children's entertainment, you would be less surprised of the fact that all animals do in nature is hunt and kill each other. And reproduce. They even sometimes kill their own children. Not very PETA-like, innit?
You know those elephants are just asking for it... waving their freakin' snouts around like they're the king of the jungle, talking abouot how long their nose is-- and we all know what *that* means (once you go pachyderm you'll never go back-yderm)--
All I wanted were elephants with frikking lasers in their heads. Was that so much to ask?
I have nothing against elephants. Some of my best friends are elephants.
And I think it's a great thing that they managed to walk down the road in the middle of the night, thus enabling me to become part of the most ridiculous blog-comment thread ever. This will be a historic document for ages to come! This conversation will be taught in high-schools all over the world. The comments will be analyzed and the participants will reach star-like status.
Thank you my friends! And next time, try to sober up before you walk the streets in your PJ's …
My older sister's first husband was Big Bertha's trainer, believe it or not. But I was too young for me to remember anything about him, and my sister's been married five times so it's not like he lasted that long anyway.
I don't think the clowns are happy or treated well, either...or at least I hope not. Damn those evil clowns!
Hey I love elephants man, they helped me remember why some notes have a sharp and others dont.
You know, like C# and stuff? (music..)
Well the thing goes - "Elephants Bellies are not sharp"
The reason is obviously because they are big and round but what youre supposed to get out of it is...
"hey, yeah! E and B dont have sharps!!"
Like you go straight from E to F, and straight from B to C.
Which reminds me of that Simpsons episode where they form a barbershop quartet called the Be Sharps. That actually made me think of elephants too.
The elephant puts the lotion in the basket.
Do a "product placement" for lotion or wanton sodomy next, Jeffrey!
Sodomy #1!
As an elephant myself, I just want to point out that my mother was killed by poachers.
Most likely, she would still be alive today if we would have been able to live in the circus.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Babar the Elephant
An old riddle goes: "how do you get down from an elephant?"
(imagine the upside-down answer: "you dont, you get down from a duck")
Not just the ordder of the sharps...they help you remember the order of the flats:
Baby Elephants Are Darn Good Cat Food
The elephants are being abused. Running a photo of it does not constitute endorsement, otherwise there would be no such thing as war photography. Ask Kim Phuc.
I just thought I'd mention that this veganist (who almost never brings up the topic) is reading this thread while watching the de facto gay-porn television series The Ultimate Figher on Spike TV.
So who the hell says animal-rights activists aren't interested in people?
Elephants are the only animals to show emotion. If they really hated having to walk through Manhattan at night (I would hate being in Manhattan period), wouldn't they be crying?
But what do I know?
I agree with Mr. Zeldman: elephants are wretched, wicked creatures, and, if there's any justice in the universe, they will get what they have coming to them.
If anyone wants an interesting take on the reality of animals "in captivity". Read Yann Martel's "Life of Pi". It's fiction, though it reads like it's non.
The fact checkin that the author has done for his book support the idea that zoos and circuses are far more concerned about animal welfare than most people. Often the practice of "freeing" an animal from it's confines is fruitless as the animal will actually come back.
An animal keeper does nothing more then provide a comfortable environment (an extremely hard thing to accomplish) and plenty of food. The "training" has only to do with shortening the distance on an animals "fight or flight" response to humans, when it comes to proximity.
Anyway, read up on your facts. Yann Martel certainly has...
Who has time to care about elephants when we have a much bigger problem...
PIE.com has turned their archive over to a pay site!
WTF
Zeldman, you know what I'm screamin, get your blog all over that shit.
By nature most animals are cautious to other animals, including humans. Few animals would obey if there weren't some kind of treat at the end of the line, or strong bars to confine them. Some authority is needed to keep animals in line, that's true. I guess anyone who actually tried handling one in real life knows.
Daniel points out that "Nazis are not known to frequent Manhattan streets". I wouldn't know, but I guess they're busy harassing Apartness.
What about furry creatures, cudly lil' ones, not the large leathery type?
It is a nice photo. Seems a bit off that some people will focus on the negatives for anything.
All deep thinking aside, it is aesthetically pleasing. A good photograph.
-Terry Tolleson
The photo of the elephant is great! But I prefer photos of near naked Peta girls protesting one thing or another!
What do the elephants like?
Hopefully Ringling does hire SPCA consultants. I'd just like to know that these animals aren't being mistreated. And relating to what the anonymous before me said, I too would prefer a photo of near-naked PETA girls, preferably with furry armpits.
This is entirely unbelievable. Have you people got nothing better to do?
Next, you'll be accusing people of forcing elephants to use table based layouts, frames and non-compliant markup (one for Jeffrey).
As I understand it Jeffrey didn't even take the photo. Get a bloody life the lot of you. If you don't like the circus ... bug them!
And elephants only use one trunk to type!!!
The poor elephants still could be worse, you could be Toby.
Me I'd rather be the elephant any day.
bhew.ol0-p[; m,uj342e4d
(That's an elephant typing "help me", well you try it with big toes.)
Oh, Man! Mooseroo is a buzz killer.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Yeah, I agree, Mooseroo is a buzz killer! Mooseroo, you took the fun out of this thread... by making some good points, especially the one about the "thousands killed every year in Asia and Africa", but did you really need to say "F*ck you"?. You're like a strong cup of coffee man! ;)
I know an unhappy elephant when I see one and that elephant is not unhappy. If it was, it would be stamping on people and snapping them like twigs with it's powerful jaws. That's what unhappy elephants do. I actually like this photo and I'm not a Nazi.
Jeffrey, thanks for the picture! (I guess I jumped on the bandwagon and became a Nazi, too.) From my point of view, this was to just say "look what I saw" not "look at the evil circus people abuse these extremely large animals with a penchant for going on rampages without a probable cause." Give me a break. It's just stinking picture of a line of elephants that don't appear to be abused in any form from this picture. How can you tell anyway? It looks like a ghost image overlayed on picture of the street!
Does anyone realize that wild animals such as elephants, lions and tigers have a better chance at at a much longer life than in the wild wher food and water my be so scarce they won't make it past adolesence? Think about it. The jungle is called the jungle for a reason.
Thanks again for the picture, Jeffery. Share more!

> Wow, what an uproar. It seems to me that when people take things to an extreme, no matter which side of the fence they're on, they lose all sight of reason and just blindly argue their point for the sake of being right.
