A neighbor I've never met, Zach Klein, caught the annual progression of Barnum & Bailey's elephants along 34th Street.
Each year when the circus comes to NYC, Barnum & Bailey marches its menagerie through the tunnels into Manhattan and along 34th Street.
It is a vision out of Fellini, made all the more dreamlike for taking place in the middle of the night.

I'd like to point out that there's nothing "dreamlike" about being held in captivity and beaten into performing stupid tricks. Wake up man, those elephants are slaves and your supporting their slavery.
Wake up, man, I'm not "supporting" the mistreatment of elephants, I'm looking out my window at the surreal image of elephants and other big creatures marching down the streets of Manhattan in the middle of the night.
As to enslavement and beatings, where do you get your facts? While I can readily believe an elephant might be happier in the wild than it is in a circus, I'd be surprised if the modern circus doesn't abide by the guidelines of the SPCA. I'd guess any circus as big and well known as Ringling hires SPCA consultants to ensure that its animals are well cared for an healthy.
But that's just a guess. You got facts?

Aside from actually visiting the webpages of various animal rights organizations, and countless TV specials, I've also personally witnessed the cruelty.
Though most circuses officially deny the beating of their animals, they bring their whips and bull-hooks into the ring with them. They won;t use it in front of the audience, but the effect is psychological in terms of how it manipulates the animals.
It's been fairly well documented that the decorative crowns on the heads of elephants cover their scars.
While I admit I was pushing a little with the support of the circus aspect of my comment, since you didn't actually pay for the sight, you most certainly are romanticizing the parade, which is moral support if you ask me.
How exactly do you think you get a one-tonne animal to do tricks? It doesn't come naturally and it would take more than peanuts.

And on a side note, in case I seem like a Jeffrey-hating type of guy, I most certainly am not. I just fail to understand why a little compassion is such a big request, especially when we're talking about "entertainment". The elephants are better left alone.

Sometimes I hold my breath in silent protest, heartened by the fairly well documented knowledge that others, all over the world, are holding their breath for the circus elephants too.

Michel Gondry captured the parade in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The commentary notes that it was a happy accident that they caught it at all. The scene wasn't planned but they shot some handheld footage that wound up being a great "flashback" scene in the film.
I too am shocked to see how quickly Godwin's Law came into play in a post about elephants marching into Manhattan. Besides, we all know Hitler was a big vegetarian and animal lover. Just like PETA.

I think it's great. I love the photo, like Jeffrey said, the surrealism of it. Besides, if you want to talk nazi's, we could go on for days about Ingrid Newkirk, head of P.E.T.A. and her 'any means neccessary' method of animal rights nonsense. No one wants to see animals abused. But the funny thing is, abuse from animals TO animals runs rampant in nature. If, according to Newkirk, animals are no less viable, important and socially reputable as humans, then one has to consider what actually stands for cruelty here.
Perhaps it's time to give lions, other predators and, frankly, bull elephants attempting to run lesser, weaker males out of the herd some lessons in animal rights.

I've been in touch with said elephants, and they are mostly fine, though disgruntled. "We are treated with a fair amount of respect," said one, "but we hate the music the humans play."

While we agree trainers in the past have been filmed by such groups as PETA clearly abusing the animals, elephants in particular - it is a very safe assumption that an outfit like Barnum and Bailey have indeed put a stop to any animal abuse.
The shocking thing about these idiotic animal rights people (making comparisons to this blogger and Hitler for example) is they rarely care about people.

I took my children to the shrine circus this weekend. I hadn't been to the circus in 20+ years.
Sadly, it's the same circus, just now, as an adult, I see that the elephants do not appear to be happy walking in a circle.
Abuse or not, it's probably not that great of a life for them. And to be honest, the circus was, in general, painfully boring. My 3 year old asked if we could leave 40 minutes into it (during the fake 'injun shooting trick') and I gladly abliged. We then spent the afternoon in the park.
My son also goes to 'circus school'...basically a kids version of cirque de soleil. Watching that type of show is MUCH more enjoyable. Watching people do acrobatics is argueably more intriguing than watching an elephant walk in a circle.
I thought "blog" was the noise an elephant makes when it sh*ts. But this is even sillier.

Well I would like to clear something up here. I am the CEO of Elephants Are
Us. We operate on an international level and we rent out said elephants to B and B circus.Each one of my competant employees keeps an elephant a piece in their own homes. And trust me..we pay our employees well so the size of their houses are right up there with Neverland. They are happy and healthy elephants. They also like to watch alot of satelite tv which can, I admit, get expensive but they get what they want.

I once took my (then) 3-year old daughter to the circus. All was fine and dandy, the clowns were funny and all, until the elephants came in, all grey and slow and marching one behind the other.
«Daddy, why are they so sad?» asked my daughter. I didn't have an answer then, but I guess that's what elephants look like in real life. All she had ever seen of elephants were cartoons.
Perhaps some of you should stop getting your facts from saturday morning children's entertainment, you would be less surprised of the fact that all animals do in nature is hunt and kill each other. And reproduce. They even sometimes kill their own children. Not very PETA-like, innit?

If anyone wants an interesting take on the reality of animals "in captivity". Read Yann Martel's "Life of Pi". It's fiction, though it reads like it's non.
The fact checkin that the author has done for his book support the idea that zoos and circuses are far more concerned about animal welfare than most people. Often the practice of "freeing" an animal from it's confines is fruitless as the animal will actually come back.
An animal keeper does nothing more then provide a comfortable environment (an extremely hard thing to accomplish) and plenty of food. The "training" has only to do with shortening the distance on an animals "fight or flight" response to humans, when it comes to proximity.
Anyway, read up on your facts. Yann Martel certainly has...

The photos of the elephants were in the context of being wonderful and dreamlike, hence putting elephants in the circus in a positive light, albeit unintentionally. Photos of the animals being abused, such as those by PETA, are obviously against the abuse. It's all about context.
On a side note, not having cable I miss out on those most excellent shows. I'll assume though, since my understanding is Spike is some rather extreme hetero channel, and it's a violent fighting show (from the title), that was meant to be funny?

By nature most animals are cautious to other animals, including humans. Few animals would obey if there weren't some kind of treat at the end of the line, or strong bars to confine them. Some authority is needed to keep animals in line, that's true. I guess anyone who actually tried handling one in real life knows.

Hopefully Ringling does hire SPCA consultants. I'd just like to know that these animals aren't being mistreated. And relating to what the anonymous before me said, I too would prefer a photo of near-naked PETA girls, preferably with furry armpits.

Wow, so many people are professing to being concerned for elephant well-being! If you are concerned for elephant well-being why don't you stop wasting your time arguing about one f*ucking elephant allegedly being beaten for entertainment? Is there a point to this?
For all your bitching, you’ve done nothing to help this poor animal, if indeed he/she is a poor animal.
Do you have a pet? A dog? A cat? A fish? A bird? If so, you’re very hypocritical! Don’t feed me the line about domestication (over thousands of years, the dog has grown to depend on humankind, food, warmth, love, yada yada yada) and how it’s all right for you to own an aquarium because they were bred for that purpose. Maybe this is just the start of a thousand years of domestication for the elephant. Flash forward and maybe my descendants will keep pet elephants in their backyards. Don’t you know they depend on our lush green yards for food and couldn’t live without the shelter of our elephant houses!
Maybe you should focus some of your anger on the slaughter of thousands of elephants annually, solely for their ivory tusks. At least your energies could ensure my great-great-great-great-great-…-great grand kid has a Bobo the Elephant for his elephant shelter! I know an unhappy elephant when I see one and that elephant is not unhappy. If it was, it would be stamping on people and snapping them like twigs with it's powerful jaws. That's what unhappy elephants do. I actually like this photo and I'm not a Nazi.

From my point of view, this was to just say "look what I saw" not "look at the evil circus people abuse these extremely large animals with a penchant for going on rampages without a probable cause." Give me a break. It's just stinking picture of a line of elephants that don't appear to be abused in any form from this picture. How can you tell anyway? It looks like a ghost image overlayed on picture of the street!
Does anyone realize that wild animals such as elephants, lions and tigers have a better chance at at a much longer life than in the wild wher food and water my be so scarce they won't make it past adolesence? Think about it. The jungle is called the jungle for a reason.
